This week students and faculty at UW-Madison held a Teach-In in support of the Employee Free Choice Act. The event was cosponsored by the Student Labor Action Coalition (SLAC) and the School for Workers.
Panelists included Don Taylor from the School for Workers, UW History Professor Will Jones, Associate Director of the Center on Wisconsin Strategy Laura Dresser, Alex Gillis of the Immigrant Workers Union, and UW Associate Professor of Sociology Chad Goldberg. Watch the video above in which Jan Van Tol of SLAC explains the difference between charity and solidarity to his fellow students.
Participants gained historical context for the Employee Free Choice Act and learned how the bill will strengthen the middle class by allowing working people to bargain for fair wages and benefits. They also heard specific examples of workers rights abuses under the current law. Watch the video below in which Eric Hoyt of SLAC explains why the Employee Free Choice Act matters to UW students.
The energy and commitment of the student activists really made this event stand out. During a brief intermission students made phone calls to Senator Kohl, urging his continued support for this legislation. In our final video clip, Ben Daniels explains why grassroots action is so critical in order to pass the Employee Free Choice Act.
