Last Wednesday, a broad coalition gathered together to call for law that would restore workers’ freedom to form and join unions in Omaha. This vigil drew attention to the dire need to restore the freedom to form and join unions and to call on Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. Vigil speakers to include community and labor leaders, workers who have struggled to join a union under the current system, faith leaders and elected officials.
Speakers included Nebraska State AFL-CIO President Ken Mass, Charles Bergman of Jobs with Justice, John Kretzchmar Director of the William Brennan Institute of Labor and a Religious Leader from Omaha. Over 40 were in attendance including workers, members of the religious community and friends and of the Nebraska State AFL-CIO. Unions in attendance included AFSCME, CWA, IBEW, Ironworkers, SEIU, SMWIA, and OPEIU.
Participants said now is the time to for labor law reform and to pass the Employee Free Choice Act. They will also demand an end to systematic mistreatment of workers at corporations like Wal-Mart, which rakes in billions in profits every year yet doesn’t provide basic necessities to its employees like a living wage and health care.
“As workers are harassed, intimidated, and fired, faith and community leaders, academics, workers, and union members are gathering to show the united support for labor law reform,” said Nebraska State AFL-CIO President Ken Mass. “The community is calling on Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, critical legislation that will help create an economy that works for all.”
