Jobs with Justice of Indiana are making invaluable contributions to the Employee Free Choice Act campaign. Today two Indiana representatives will be headed to Washington DC to participate in a press conference and meeting with Senator Evan Bayh. Pastor Jim Jackson from the Indianapolis Concerned Clergy and Anne Weiss, a Masarachia Scholar from IUPUI will join Barbara Ehrenreich, NOW President Kim Gandy, Senator Sherrod Brown, and AFL-CIO Vice-President Arlene Holt-Baker.
Meanwhile, in South Bend today there will be an informational picket and press conference outside of Federal Express. The President of FedEx Corp., is outspoken in his opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act. “I think the opposition to card-check is so broad and so deep in American industry that all we can do is to say we do not think that is good public policy,” he told securities analysts in an earnings’ conference call last December. In particular, I think the mandatory arbitration provision would be very ill advised. We strongly oppose it but we are just one of many people in that regard." FedEx threatened to cancel an order for billions of dollars of cargo planes if Congress passes this legislation.
"It's very important that we all make sure our voices are heard on this issue. Companies are using their pocket books and influence to defeat the Employee Free Choice Act across the country. We can't all travel to Washington DC to speak with our elected officials like our delegation is, but writing letters and making phone calls is a powerful way we can all contribute without leaving Indiana," said Allison Luthe, an organizer with Central Indiana Jobs with Justice.
